THE GIN GAME TAKES THE STAGE AT NEWLY RENOVATED COACH HOUSE

"THE GIN GAME" MARCH 21-29

"The Gin Game" directed by Matt Wilks | March 21-29 (four matinee performances all at 2 p.m.).

The Gin Game is a 1978 Pulitzer Prize-winning tragicomedy by D.L. Coburn about two elderly nursing home residents, Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey. They bond over gin rummy, but as Fonsia consistently wins, their games become a battleground for exposing their insecurities, failures, and loneliness.

“Over The River and Through The Woods” coming April 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7 p.m.; April 19, 26 at 2 p.m.

Featuring The Silver Lining Players: Some families show love with hugs. This one shows it with schemes. When a young New Jersey man lands his dream job in Seattle, his Italian-American grandparents aren't ready to let go — and they're not going down without a fight. What follows is a deliciously funny, deeply felt comedy about the ties that bind, the traditions we carry, and the impossible task of growing up when your family refuses to let you.

We are also launching Makeshift Radio Theater! We have a team of enthusiastic radio theater devotees who will be developing this new project for Makeshift Theater. They will be working with Producer Jane Bond. We welcome Bill Morgan, Charles Leonard, Tom Stephan, Dave Brinkley, Noah Knapp, Justin Miller and Jim Coss.

We will be performing a wide variety of plays, monologues, and stories with sound effects and dynamic actors. These productions will be a regular part of the performances presented at Makeshift. We also will be offering training for sound technicians to learn to use a sound board, a Foley system, and the ins and outs of producing exciting sound designs. We will be recruiting directors and actors who want to create radio theater.

This undertaking is supported by a generous grant from the late Bud Graske and Linda Graske.

The carriage house is located on the southwest portion of the AWCC Estate, a five-acre property in Akron’s vibrant West Hill neighborhood. Makeshift Theater will revitalize the historic structure while preserving its architectural integrity and cultural significance.

The Akron Woman’s City Club has been a cornerstone of Akron’s cultural landscape, and this partnership continues its legacy of supporting the arts in Summit County. “We’re honored to work with the Akron Woman’s City Club on this exciting venture,” Bond added. The Coach House has been a beloved venue for theater productions in the past, and we look forward to honoring that tradition while bringing our creative vision to the space.

Support for the theater’s mission can be made on Venmo via @Makeshift-Theater. Interested volunteers should contact makeshiftakron@gmail.com for opportunities to support our mission.
